Compact Saturday

I went to watch rugby union with some friends at AAMI Park last night, where the Melbourne Rebels were roundly beaten by the Queensland Reds. That aside, it was a fun night. At the end, for some bizarre reason, they invited the fans onto the pitch in a general "free for all". You wouldn't see that in an English stadium...

This photo was taken with my compact and I'm pretty happy with the result. So, inspired by other bloggers who take amazing photos with compact cameras (such as Dianne over at Adelaide and Beyond, for example), I've decided I'm going to put up a photo taken with my compact each Saturday in May and June. The working title is "Compact Satyrday" - snappy, eh?:-) If anyone else out there uses a compact for their blog pics, I'd love to know, as it isn't always evident.

  1. I am not sure about the compact, but I am eagerly waiting for the 'satyrday' ...

I would not worry about being beaten by the QLD Reds ... par for the course.

All the hooligans were at the AFL ...

  2. I use a compact for my blog (Canon Powershot). I take my camera everywhere so it has to be small and light.

Back in the good ol' days, they used to let people onto the oval when the siren went at the end of every AFL game (or VFL as it was then). I'm surprised they let it happen at AAMI Park.

  4. Very nice shot Alan, BW was a good choice!
My compact camera is too old, a need a new one to replace it; many times I'd love to take a photo but with a big camera it was impossible to be unnoticed.

  5. Good luck getting people behind this one. Though you make some VERY fascinating points, you’re going to have to do more than bring up a few things that may be different than what we’ve already heard. What are trying to say here? What do you want us to think? It seems like you can’t really get behind a unique thought. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

  6. Hi Alan - thanks for the kind words - I'll be definitely contributing a shot from a compact - maybe one day I'll upgrade to a SLR and take spectacular night shots like you!
    Have a great week-end.

  7. Oh, I never presumed anyone else would take up the clarion call! Just my own little project to divert me:-) Thanks all for your kind comments.

Julie - well spotted, I think there might be insufficient mythological deities hanging around Melbourne to fulfil that particular ambition:-)

Frisky - wow. Just goes to show, the tools of the trade aren't the most important thing.

Espana - You must be a spambot... only a spambot would believe there is anything "FASCINATING" about the points I make on this blog..

  8. Excellent b&w. I'll bet you can find some great crowd shots at a game.

  9. Neat capture Alan. I came across a blog recently which claimed it's not the camera that counts it's the eye. I think they are right so I also look forward to more compact shots.

  10. Hi Alan, like the shot, B & W suits the scene so well and the idea of compact Saturday a great idea. I will get involved in this if only I can find where I put my compact down! Really annoying. Fingers crossed.

  11. Thanks, Rae! I hadn't really expected other people to follow suit, but would love to see your compact shots!

I still have lots to learn about photography. All comments or constructive criticism are very welcome!
